Buying gold jewellery: what to check
How do I check that gold jewellery is genuine?
Look for the BIS hallmark. Hallmarked gold jewellery carries the BIS logo, the purity (for example 22K916) and a 6-digit HUID code, which you can verify in the BIS CARE app.
How is the price of gold jewellery worked out?
It is the day's gold rate for the purity multiplied by the weight, plus making charges and GST. Ask for a bill that lists the weight, purity, rate, making charges and taxes separately.
What should I check before visiting a shop?
Open the shop’s page for its address, opening hours and directions, and call or message the shop to confirm it has what you are looking for.
Check today's gold rate before you visit, so you can compare the rate a shop quotes.
